✨ H_SDFUIOutline (URP / HDRP / Built-in)
A clean, resolution-independent outline for Unity UI (uGUI). Sharp at any size or scale. Free.
❓ The Problem
❌ Mesh/vertex UI outlines shimmer, alias and disappear the moment they get thin ❌ Small sizes, high-DPI screens and animated scaling make them fall apart ❌ Rounded corners look faceted unless you crank the segment count
✅ The Solution
An SDF (signed-distance-field) outline: the edge is computed per-pixel from a distance field instead of built from geometry, so it stays crisp and consistent at any resolution — no flicker, no dropouts, smooth corners. A classic mesh-ring mode is included for when you want it.
⚡ Performance
One quad, one lightweight fragment shader, premultiplied-alpha blending — allocation-free in SDF mode. It's a UI graphic, and it costs like one. Works in any pipeline with no render feature or setup.
🎯 Features
• Two modes: procedural SDF (crisp, never flickers) and legacy mesh ring
• Resolution-independent - holds up at tiny sizes and while scaling
• Outline width, corner radius, edge softness, fill center and color
• Fully scriptable — animate width/color for hover, focus and select effects
• URP, HDRP and Built-in — plain uGUI, drop it on any RectTransform
• Component + a GameObject → UI create menu; its shader is auto-included so it never strips from builds
• Full source. No DLLs. And free.
🛠️ Easy Setup
✔ GameObject → UI → H SDF UI Outline (or add the component to any UI RectTransform) ✔ Pick a mode, set width and corner radius
✔ Set the color 0 done
⚠️ Good to know
• The outline shape is a rounded rectangle — perfect for panels, buttons, cards and highlights, not arbitrary sprite silhouettes • SDF mode renders through its own included shader (registered automatically, so builds are covered)
🧨 Battle Tested in Production
Built for our own game, not a tech demo. H_SDFUIOutline exists because Silent Strike - our in-development tactical shooter - needed clean UI outlines that stayed crisp at every size and on every screen, instead of the flicker you get from stock UI outlines. It's used across our real in-game UI.
