Ultimate Water System 2D is a complete URP toolkit for building beautiful, interactive water in 2D and 2.5D games. Create everything from calm pools and rivers to aquarium-style scenes, flooded caves, and rain-covered environments, all through a unified, artist-friendly Inspector.
Choose the right water for your scene
- 2D Water Body for traditional side-view water
- 2.5D Water Body for perspective scenes with real surface depth
- Fake Perspective 2D Water for a convincing dimensional surface while retaining a 2D workflow
- Simple Water 2D for lightweight decorative pools, rivers, waterfalls, and custom Bézier shapes
Create the look you want
- Customizable surface and underwater appearance
- Animated waves with independent visual and physical responses
- Impact ripples, movement wakes, splashes, distortion, and foam
- Sprite and scene reflections
- Stylized underwater light rays
- Random Ripples for rain and ambient surface activity
- Floating props and debris
- Exclusion zones for dry caves, rooms, islands, and nested water areas
- Reusable presets for quickly sharing styles between water bodies
Add interactive water gameplay
- Physics-based buoyancy for floating objects
- CPU-based water height sampling for accurate surface queries and gameplay interactions
- Stable floating platforms with rider support, dip, and tilt
- Water sensors for contact, submersion, depth, surface position, and entry or exit events
- Character helpers for swimming, diving, water jumping, currents, and ripple response
- Global currents and localized current zones
- Public sampling and ripple APIs for custom controllers, gameplay systems, VFX, audio, and animation
The gameplay helpers work alongside your existing controllers rather than replacing them, giving you control over movement, input, collision handling, and final velocity.
Designed for efficient authoring
- One unified Inspector for geometry, visuals, interactions, and optional modules
- Scene handles and visualization tools
- Automatic reflection setup
- Editable presets with protected package defaults
- Complete 2D, 2.5D, and rainy showcase scenes
- Detailed online documentation
- Controller integration examples and API reference
- Performance guidance and troubleshooting
And much more...
Ideal for
Platformers, metroidvanias, adventure games, RPGs, puzzle games, cozy games, and any stylized 2D or 2.5D project that needs water to look alive and respond to gameplay.
Requirements and compatibility
- Unity 6.2 or newer
- Universal Render Pipeline 17 or newer
- Currently supports the URP 2D Renderer
- Uses the Camera Sorting Layer Texture for underwater scene rendering
- Support for the standard URP Universal Renderer (3D Renderer) is planned for an upcoming update
Important notes
- Simple Water 2D is currently intended for visual authoring. Interactive support is planned for a future update.
- Water Currents are included but are still being refined and need additional testing for individual gameplay setups. Similar directional-current behavior can also be created easily through custom scripts.
- Very dense Random Ripple setups currently use analytical ripple evaluation and should be profiled on target hardware. With sensible visual and physics ripple budgets, 2D games can still achieve high frame rates, including 120 FPS.
- A future update is planned to replace analytical Random Ripple evaluation with a RenderTexture-based heightfield, allowing significantly more simultaneous ripples with better performance and a lower runtime cost.
