FurBrush – Paint, Groom & Render Realistic Fur in Unity 🐿️
Create, paint, groom, and optimize realistic fur directly inside the Unity Editor. FurBrush provides three flexible rendering methods — Shell Fur, Fur Cards, and GPU Strands — for everything from soft fuzz and short coats to long, stylized hair.
✨ Key Features
- Paint fur Coverage, Length, Width, and Comb direction
- Fast radial Pie Menu — hold Space in the Scene View
- Non-destructive Shell Geometry optimization
- Full, Balanced, Performance, and Aggressive geometry presets
- Live shell layer and triangle statistics
- Fur Cards with scattering, grooming, alpha mixing, and color modes
- GPU Strands with compute culling, skinning, and distance LOD
- Symmetry, Bleed Guard, Raycast UV, and UV1 workflow
- Shell and Fur Card mesh baking
- Support for static and skinned meshes
- Dedicated shaders for URP and HDRP
- Demo scenes, fur textures, profiles, and complete PDF documentation
Geometry Reducer (FurShellMeshReducer): Generating multiple shell layers (e.g., 16 or 28) drastically increases the triangle count. The ability to automatically reduce the base topology by 50%+ specifically for the fur layers—without affecting the character's original mesh—is a massive performance advantage that is rarely found in cheaper alternatives.
- Dynamic Alpha Mixing (Organic Variety): The painting brush allows you to select either a single strand texture or select multiple alphas at once. When painting, the system dynamically and randomly mixes the chosen alpha templates, creating highly organic, natural-looking fur variation and breaking up repetitive tiling patterns.
- Zero-Setup Smart Importing: Drag-and-drop your custom grayscale alpha maps directly into the tool's folder. The built-in asset postprocessor (AssetPostprocessor) automatically configures them with optimal linear settings, high-quality uncompressed format, and enables Preserve Coverage mipmapping. This ensures that fine hair fibers keep their exact volume and sharpness even at far distances.
🎮 Designed for Performance
Reduce shell geometry without modifying the original model. Every shell layer can share the same optimized topology, significantly lowering triangle counts while keeping the workflow fully non-destructive.
