Matter is a GPU-accelerated 2D material and fluid simulation for Unity. Terrain, liquids and gases share the same grid, so the world can shift, flow and react while the game is running.

Matter works well for platformers, sandbox games and puzzle games where destructible environments are part of the gameplay. It can generate collision data for Unity’s 2D and 3D physics systems.

The simulation runs on a high-performance GPU solver, with a multithreaded Burst CPU fallback available. Matter supports modern PBR rendering with detailed surfaces, transparent fluids and gases, dynamic lighting and emission. Each material can combine multiple texture sets and detail textures, while stochastic UV mapping helps reduce visible tiling.

The built-in Scene View editor lets you paint and shape worlds, undo changes and preview the simulation without entering Play Mode. Substance behaviour and appearance can be adjusted to fit the project.

Set a target temperature for each substance, with independent strengths for heating or cooling itself and surrounding cells. Place heating and cooling sources to drive local phase changes.

Features

  • GPU-accelerated simulation of terrain, powders, liquids, gases and heat
  • Configurable phase changes and material reactions
  • Active heating and cooling: substance temperature targets and placeable thermal sources
  • Custom substance definitions for density, viscosity, flow, dispersion, compressibility and temperature transitions
  • Scene View world painting with simulation preview
  • Save and load worlds
  • PBR rendering for terrain and transparent matter
  • 2D and 3D physics integration
  • Desktop WebGPU support on compatible browsers and hardware
  • Multithreaded Burst CPU fallback

Add-ons

FishNet networking integration is planned as a separate add-on after the core release. It is not included in Matter.

Designed for Unity 6 and URP 17.

OpenAI Codex assisted with coding and documentation and generated the Showcase crate, football and cabin sprites, the adapted Matter logo, and promotional artwork.

Minimum editor: Unity 6000.0.84f1 with URP 17.0.4. Unity 6.0 WebGPU is experimental; the published Showcase was built and browser-tested on Unity 6000.6.2f1. The Showcase targets desktop browsers. HDRP and Built-in Render Pipeline integrations are not included.

Sample textures: Stylized Textures (CC0). UI font: Liberation Sans (SIL OFL 1.1). The bundled manual retains DocFX and template dependency notices. See ThirdPartyNotices.md for sources and license details.
