Record gameplay to H.264 MP4 using each platform's hardware encoder. Async GPU capture, live audio, native share sheet. Works with Built-in, URP, HDRP and custom render pipelines.

Key Features

  • Records the Screen, a Camera, or any RenderTexture to H.264 MP4
  • Hardware encoding per platform: AVAssetWriter (iOS/macOS), MediaCodec+MediaMuxer (Android), Media Foundation (Windows), Unity MediaEncoder (Editor)
  • Captures scene audio from the AudioListener or a specific AudioSource, with automatic downmix to stereo for surround setups
  • One-line save to the Photos/Gallery on mobile or the Videos folder on desktop
  • Share the recording through the native share sheet, or open it in the platform's default player
  • In-app playback of a finished recording via a drop-in preview component, aspect-ratio aware
  • Optional colour grading pass (exposure, contrast, saturation, gamma, tint) that never touches what the player sees
  • Works with Built-in, URP, and HDRP — no render pipeline package dependency
  • Resolution and quality presets that scale bit rate automatically with resolution and frame rate
  • Custom inspector showing only the settings that apply, plus a live bit-rate and megabytes-per-minute estimate
  • Extensible frame-processor hook for running your own GPU pass over each captured frame
  • Two ready-to-run samples and full EditMode/PlayMode test coverage

Native Video Recorder turns any Unity project into one with built-in clip recording — no ffmpeg, no software encoding, no per-platform encoder code to write yourself.

Point it at the Screen, a Camera, or a RenderTexture, and it records straight to an H.264 MP4 using each platform's own hardware video encoder: AVAssetWriter on iOS and macOS, MediaCodec + MediaMuxer on Android, Media Foundation on Windows, and Unity's MediaEncoder in the Editor. Audio is tapped live from the mix and muxed into the same file. Frames leave the GPU through AsyncGPUReadback, so recording doesn't stall your render thread — built for real-time mobile, desktop, and AR apps where every millisecond of frame time matters.

Why developers use it:

  • Shareable gameplay clips in one component — drop it on a GameObject, call one method, and hand players a finished MP4 for the native share sheet, photo gallery, or Videos folder.
  • Hardware encoding everywhere — no software fallback, no ffmpeg binary to bundle, no encoder licensing to worry about.
  • Any render pipeline — Built-in, URP, HDRP, and custom SRPs are all supported through Unity's standard render-request API, not pipeline-specific hacks.
  • Non-blocking capture — async GPU readback keeps recording off the critical path, so frame rate holds up on mobile and VR/AR hardware.
  • Optional polish included — a built-in color-correction pass on the recorded output and an in-app playback preview, both demonstrated end-to-end in the included demo scene.

Platform coverage: iOS, Android (API 29+), macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel, Player), Windows (x64, Player), and the Unity Editor. Requires Unity 2021.3 or newer.

Whether you're shipping a mobile hit that needs a "record your run" button or an AR app that needs session capture, Native Video Recorder replaces weeks of platform-specific encoder work with one component and a method call.
