Rope System is a Unity tool that allows you to create flexible, sagging ropes, cables, and chains with customizable waypoints. Designed for ease of use and flexibility, it includes an intuitive editor with real-time mesh updates, giving you control over radius, segment detail, sag strength, and waypoint management. This asset is perfect for adding realistic ropes or similar structures to any scene with minimal setup.

Key Features

  • Customizable Waypoints: Define the rope’s path by adding, removing, or adjusting waypoints directly in the scene. The rope smoothly follows the path, and waypoints can be easily modified to achieve the desired shape.
  • Realistic Sag Effect: Adjust the sagging strength to create the look of heavy or lightweight ropes, providing a natural drooping effect between waypoints.
  • Closed Loop Option: Create a continuous loop by toggling the Closed option, which connects the last waypoint to the first.
  • End Caps: Automatically generated end caps ensure open ropes are visually complete, without open edges.
  • Adjustable Rope Radius & Segments: Set the rope thickness and detail level for optimal appearance and performance, balancing between smoothness and processing efficiency.
  • Intuitive Editor Tools: Includes buttons to generate and clear the mesh, add or remove waypoints, and color-coded visual cues for start, end, and intermediate waypoints.
  • Customizable Material: Assign any material to the rope mesh, making it easy to fit various visual styles, from rugged chains to sleek cables.

Examples

  1. Hanging Bridge: Use multiple waypoints and a moderate sag to create ropes for a hanging bridge, adding realism and flexibility to each suspension cable.
  2. Power Lines: Set low sag and high tubular segments for taut cables between electrical poles.
  3. Swing Rope: Add a single sagging rope to a tree with heavy sag, creating a natural appearance for a swing rope.

How to Use

  1. Attach the RopeSystem component to a GameObject.
  2. Use the "Add Waypoint" button to start defining the rope path. Adjust each waypoint’s position in the Scene view as needed.
  3. Configure settings like Rope Radius, Sag Strength, and Segments in the inspector to refine the rope’s appearance.
  4. Click Generate Rope Mesh to render the mesh or Clear Rope Mesh to reset.
  5. Assign a material and adjust the Closed option if you want the rope to loop back on itself.
